Aphasia is a neurological condition that impairs a person's ability to communicate. It can affect the ability to speak, write, or understand language, both verbal and written. Aphasia may occur after a stroke or a head injury affecting the language areas of the brain.

John Crichton suffered a form of aphasia as a side-effect of an operation to remove a neuro biotracer chip from his brain.[1][2] The chip's tendrils were deeply enmeshed, and the operating Diagnosan, Tocot, was unable to avoid some losses despite his utmost caution.[1] The surgery was interrupted by the arrival of Scorpius while Tocot was working in Crichton's speech areas, leaving Crichton unable to communicate.[1]

Crichton could still understand spoken language, but he was unable to produce coherent words, only gibberish.[1][2] During Unity with Zhaan, he communicated with her fluently in psychic speech.[2] He also communicated fluently with the remnant of a neural clone ("Harvey") that remained part of his subconscious post-surgery.[2]

Crichton made an immediate and complete recovery from his aphasia after Tocot treated him with a neural tissue transplant from an Interion donor.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The gibberish uttered by John after the surgery was not random, but scripted by David Kemper.[3]
