After coming back to Earth and sharing alien knowledge and technology to the US government, John Crichton proposed sending scientists into space to enable humanity to know more about the galaxy. The US government decides to unilaterally seize control the project and only allows their own scientists to go to gain competitive edge against China and Russia. This was later publicly exposed and immediately overturned by Jack Crichton at the final conference on behalf of his son to the disapproval of the U.S. or at least the liaising representative assigned to the project.
