Rylani was born on the world of New Heather. Many cycles before John Crichton's arrival in the Uncharted Territories, Rylani and her husband Ghebb were aboard a Leviathan of Sebacean pioneers with plans to start a colony on the planet Motak IV in the Uncharted Territories. Outside of the protection of Peacekeepers, the ship was attacked by Scarrans. Everyone aboard was killed except for Rylani and Ghebb who managed to escape on a transport pod.

With no companions but each other, few supplies, and the possible threat of Scarrans, Rylani and Ghebb were unsure of their survival. It wasn't long, however, before even this possibly hopeful future was shattered as the Scarrans arrived, having tracked the pod down. A party of at least one Scarran boarded the ship, easily shrugging off pulse pistol fire from Ghebb before killing him and taking Rylani prisoner.
