Scarrans were a bipedal species with a sebaceanoid body structure, leathery reptilian skin, and claws. The Scarran physical appearance ranged from pale white to dark gray skin colors, and heights which exceeded most species, hovering at least half a foot over most Sebaceans and Humans, even occasionally towering over Luxans.
Biology[]
Like other Sebaceanoid species, Scarrans had one thumb and four fingers. However, their hands were notably larger when compared to species such as Humans, Sebaceans, and Kalish. ("We're So Screwed - Fetal Attraction")
Scarrans had exceptional strength ("Look at the Princess - The Maltese Crichton") which, combined with their thick hides, made them difficult to subdue.[1] Even the exceptionally tough epidermises of Luxans fell short of Scarran scales when it comes to resilience. ("A Many-Splendor'd Thing") The Scarran body was also capable of huge amounts of brute strength and it was seemingly impossible for a member of any other species thus far known to take one on and live without a clear advantage of some variety. Their thick skin makes them impervious to blades and pulse weapons, though explosives in bodily orifices have proven fatal. ("Won't Get Fooled Again", "Season of Death") Qualta blade projectiles appear to be able to at least wound a Scarran after a few shots. ("Season of Death") Their eyes were more vulnerable than their scales, and could be penetrated with sharp objects. ("Incubator")
Scarrans had strikingly high body temperatures.[1] The Scarran body thrived in heat; ("Look at the Princess - The Maltese Crichton") what was considered optimal temperature for a Scarran was uncomfortably hot for a Sebacean. ("Incubator") Scarran bodies naturally produced heat—enough to cause a Human to sweat when in their immediate presence. ("Won't Get Fooled Again") Scarrans also had the ability to project heat, produced in part from a gland located in the left side of their upper chest. If the gland was removed (as Peacekeepers would do to any Scarran they took prisoner), the Scarran in question not only lost their heat projection ability, but were weakened overall as a result, including making them much more vulnerable to pulse weaponry. ("Fractures") Scarrans also lost this ability when in a sufficiently cold environment, ("Season of Death") and cold enough temperatures could kill them. ("Incubator")
Two Scarrans, each displaying different facial structure
Scarran morphology varied significantly. There were at least two types of Scarran faces. One was more sebaceanoid, with a well formed mouth, eyes, nose, and chin. ("Incubator") The other type was more crocodilian or equine, with a portruding mouth, less developed eyes and slits instead of nostrils, with little or no nose portrusion. ("Season of Death")
The Scarrans' Achilles heel was their dependency on the Crystherium Utilia flower. Without the flower, while Scarrans were naturally strong, they were not very bright. When the flower was consumed however, their intelligence was increased to the point of competing with other species such as Sebaceans (the flower literally made their brains larger). The flower was consumed by members of the Scarrans' leadership caste, ("We're So Screwed - La Bomba") and was considered a delicacy among their kind. ("We're So Screwed - Hot to Katratzi") Their reliance on the flower meant expansion of the Scarran Empire was slow, and dependent on sites where the flower could be grown. ("We're So Screwed - La Bomba")
Scarran blood was colored red. ("Won't Get Fooled Again") Their eyes appeared in a variety of colors, including pure black irises ("Look at the Princess - The Maltese Crichton") and glowing red. ("Won't Get Fooled Again") Like other species, male Scarrans possessed mivonks, but they were located internally. ("We're So Screwed - Hot to Katratzi")
Technology[]
Scarrans were a technologically advanced species.[1] They had the ability to recover knowledge from fetal DNA (i.e. knowledge possessed by the parents at the time of the child's conception). ("Prayer")
Technological advancement is something the Scarrans seem particularly good at with a few devices never seen before. Their method of interrogation involves a device which disrupts brainwave patterns in the subject, disorienting them and making them believe that they are in an increasingly confusing situation. The goal of this is to drive the subject into madness and break their mind. They have also mastered the art of creating replicas of people, known as bioloids. Furthermore, bioloids can be implanted with electrical devices, such as tracking chips. The Scarran fleet is based around large vessels called Dreadnoughts. These are at least twice the size of a regular Peacekeeper command carrier. From these they can launch Strykers, small but fast attack craft. Strykers also have a propulsion system that is quicker than the non-extended version of Starburst performed by Leviathans. The standard Leviathan starburst is unable to match the Stryker's top speed due to the recovery period required between each jump.
Society[]
Scarran soldiers
Scarrans were a powerful, intelligent, ambitious species with a steadfast belief in their own superiority.[1] They regarded other sapients as "lower lifeforms." They despised weakness, and resilience was built up through "the usual incentives" (i.e. pain). Scorpius noted that hubris was the Scarrans' primary failing. ("Incubator")
The language Scarrans spoke was called "Scarran." ("Promises")
Scarrans had a practice called a blood vow. In it, one would cut their finger. The blood would fall onto the tongue of the other individual, and the one who cut their finger would suck the wound, sealing a pact. ("Prayer") Their leadership caste practiced death rituals. ("We're So Screwed - La Bomba")
The Scarran race carries a long military history. Several thousand cycles ago peace was made between Sebaceans and Scarrans, overseen by the Priests of Arnessk. However, since the priests' disappearance, the Scarrans decided to conquer all other sentient life and began taking the galaxy system by system. In spite of the fact that they were superior militarily to the Peacekeepers, the two powers spent years hovering near all-out war as the Scarrans believed that Peacekeepers possessed superior weaponry in the form of wormhole technology. During this time, there existed a buffer state between the Peacekeeper space and Scarran space. This is the area of the Breakaway Colonies, and also consists of the Uncharted Territories and possibly Tormented Space.
It is known to the Peacekeepers that the Scarran military force outnumbers Peacekeepers by a ratio of 10 to 1 (see Episode 3.11 - "Incubator"). However, while the Scarran forces are technologically advanced, the Peacekeepers are trying to forge ahead with wormhole research for use as a weapon. The Scarrans have only recently found out about this and are eager to acquire the technology for themselves.
The Scarrans have dominion over at least two races, the Charrids and Kalish who serve as underlings to the Scarran Empire. The Charrids are grunt soldiers, serving as advance scout parties or raiders. The Kalish serve as technicians and maintenance workers. While the Charrids do not seem to mind being under the thumb of the Scarrans, the Kalish dislike it. A Kalish resistance exists which uses Bioloid agents designed with abilities specifically to kill Scarrans. The exact exploits and progress achieved by this resistance are unknown.
The Scarrans have a well thought out social structure and government known simply as the Hierarchy. Even the Emperor has to answer to and be judged by the Hierarchy, and it is common knowledge that treachery exists within it, by which way people can steal rulership from each other.
