In an Earth idiom, to be a stand-up person was to display some conviction or integrity in one's principles.

When Aeryn Sun was telling John Crichton how speaking up on John's behalf had resulted in her fellow Peacekeepers turning on her, she remarked that she didn't know what she had been thinking. John replied, "Well, back home, we call it 'being stand-up'." She responded by pointing out, "I stood up, and I no longer have a home." ("I, E.T.")
