A starburst chamber was a room within Leviathans which coalesced then released the exotic energies required to initiate a starburst maneuver. It was located at the base of the Leviathan's central internal spine-spire which vascularised through all levels of the Leviathan and culminated in the Pilot's den. Leviathans' starburst chambers were considered the only internal space within a Leviathan where Pilot biology did not innervate – meaning this chamber was the only chamber on a Leviathan not under constant surveillance by its Pilot (if one is installed).

Moya's starburst chamber was roughly circular, with three centrally-located, brightly lit spires which converged at the chamber's center. The three spires were important to the charge and discharge cycle of Moya's starburst energy. At Moya's initiation, they began charge activity, which coalesced starburst energies in a circular field within the radius of the spire-tips, first creating an ellipsoid energy field contained by the spires, then filling the entire chamber with dangerous levels of energy. Precautionary measures activated within microts of the field's instantiation, causing the chamber's doors to automatically close.

The three starburst chamber spires corresponded directly with Moya's three external dorsal caudal fins, which displayed motility during the starburst maneuver by opening and closing as the Leviathan completed its transition from normal space into starburst.

At one point, Chiana was temporarily inhabited by an "energy rider" which was attracted to the starburst chamber. While the energy rider was annihilated by the starburst energies, Chiana managed to escape the chamber in time. However, one DRD modified by Crichton was trapped within the chamber, demonstrating that Moya and Pilot's control over the DRDs free will either extended to forcing it to risk itself to ensure Chiana's safety – or this control was incomplete, allowing for its unintentional destruction.
